Abstract

The present article is devoted to the methodological and thematic analysis of the interpretive approach of Farid Esack, a Muslim Quran scholar from South Africa, in the light of Islamic liberation theology. The importance of the subject is that liberation theology, as a relatively new concept in Islamic theology, has various and diverse dimensions that are discussed and challenged in the contemporary world, and Farid Esack is one of the most leading thinkers in this field in the Islamic world. In this research, while providing a precise definition of liberation theology and examining its various dimensions, it has been determined that Esack 's personal situations from childhood to adulthood have had a serious impact in detail on the formation of his interpretive approach. In this research, the relationship of Esack 's interpretive approach to key concepts of liberation theology such as justice and praxis has been examined. Finally, this study determines that Esack, by criticizing traditional approaches to Quran interpretation, emphasizes the importance of experience and practice in understanding the meanings of the Quran.
