Content Analysis of Citizenship Education in Nahj al-Balāghah

Abstract

Citizenship education is among the important topics in social, political, and educational studies, with roots extending across history, and it has been addressed by both ancient and modern philosophers. The importance and status of this concept in the contemporary era are such that citizens are regarded as one of the key elements of societal development. The vast treasury of Nahj al-Balāghah by Amir al-Mu’minin Ali (peace be upon him) is one of the richest Islamic books and sources, containing major themes and components across all individual, educational, social, economic, political, and cultural domains. Despite the passage of many centuries since its compilation, the necessity of attending to and utilizing its themes in all individual, educational, social, economic, political, and cultural fields is felt more than ever. Given the significant position of citizenship education in society, the present study employs a qualitative content analysis method to examine and analyze the components of citizenship education in Nahj al-Balāghah. The findings indicate that components of citizenship education—such as freedom, tolerance and forbearance, critical thinking, and responsibility—are abundantly present in Nahj al-Balāghah.
