Intertextuality of Qur’anic Verses in Javāmiʿ al-Ḥikāyāt wa Lawāmiʿ al-Riwāyāt (Part Three)

Abstract

Intertextuality, as a modern approach in literary criticism, examines the implicit and explicit interactions and relationships among different texts. Introduced by Julia Kristeva in the twentieth century, this concept has become a powerful analytical tool for the study of literary and cultural texts. The present study investigates the intertextuality of Qur’anic verses in the important literary work Javāmiʿ al-Ḥikāyāt wa Lawāmiʿ al-Riwāyāt (Part Three) in order to analyze the role and influence of Qur’anic verses within the text. Using a descriptive-analytical method, the Qur’anic verses employed in this work were identified and extracted, and the ways in which they were incorporated into the primary text were analyzed. The analysis encompasses direct and indirect references to Qur’anic verses, their semantic and aesthetic effects, and the role of intertextuality in enriching the work’s content and structure. The findings indicate that Qur’anic verses are employed extensively and in diverse ways throughout the work, appearing not only through direct quotation and reference but also through indirect and symbolic forms. Qur’anic intertextuality in this work, in addition to reinforcing its religious and ethical motifs, contributes to the creation of deeper layers of meaning and enhances its literary appeal.
