Words involved in the Quran; A comparative study of the opinions of supporters and opponents with emphasis on the words "إبريق, إستبرق, سُندوس"

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to present the arguments of those in favor and against the words involved in the Quran through a comparative study of three words that are disputed among Quranic scholars regarding their inclusion. The method of this study is qualitative and theoretical, and like other theoretical studies, it is presented in the form of a description and analysis of documents and library information, and of course, it aims to examine the opinions that are extracted in a comparative and case-based manner. The evidence examined in this study is three Quranic words (إبريق, استبرق, and سندوس) that are the subject of controversy among Quranic scholars regarding their inclusion or non-inclusion. By studying the opinions of Quranic scholars and commentators, we have come to three conclusions: A group opposes the existence of such words. On the other hand, some have accepted it, and the third group has somehow tried to combine the two opinions. As a result, what seemed to be the argument of the supporters of the theory that the Quran is free from mixed words is more ideological than lexical and linguistic, and stems from their belief in the antiquity of the Quran. In short, the argument of the opponents of mixed words about the mentioned words is that those words are of Arabic origin and have been translated into non-Arab languages, which is of course a kind of speculation, because determining mixed words, except for proper names, in any language is a difficult and exhausting task. The middle ground opinion here is no different from the opinion of those who believe in the existence of mixed words in the Quran, because they also consider the origin of the words to be non-Arabic.
