Abstract

Indication (dalālah) refers to guidance, direction, and signification, and in technical usage it denotes a state in a thing that leads to knowledge of another thing. It is divided into three categories: denotative (conformity), implicative (inclusion), and necessary (entailment). One of the subtypes of necessary indication is implicative indication (dalālat al-iqtidhā’), which refers to the indication of speech toward a meaning external to it, such that the correctness of the statement—whether linguistically, legally, rationally, or conventionally—depends on the assumption of an implicit term. Revelatory texts such as the Qur’an, like other forms of discourse and writing such as traditions (hadith) and legal provisions, possess necessary implications. The interpreter, in the process of interpreting verses, traditions, and legal provisions, engages directly with the text and must derive the intention of the speaker from within the structure of the discourse. Therefore, in the process of understanding and interpretation, careful attention must be paid to such implications. For this reason, implicative indication plays a fundamental and essential role in comprehending discourse and uncovering the intent of the speaker and the legislator. The present study, conducted using a descriptive-analytical method, examines the concept of implicative indication, its role and practical position in the interpretation of verses, traditions, and legal provisions, and provides multiple examples from these sources.
