Abstract

The primary aim of this study is to compare the themes and expressions found in Nahj al-Balāgha with those in the works of Saadi and to examine his approach in receiving and integrating these teachings. This research has been conducted using a descriptive-analytical method and relies on library-based sources. The findings indicate that Saadi, particularly in his literary corpus, has extensively utilized the ethical, social, and philosophical concepts of Nahj al-Balāgha, and these influences are clearly observable in both his poetry and prose. These results underscore the intellectual significance and formative role of Nahj al-Balāgha in shaping Saadi’s literary and social thought and can contribute meaningfully to both religious literary studies and Persian literary scholarship. Given the profound influence of Islamic teachings on Persian literature—especially in the works of Saadi—the relevance of this subject becomes all the more evident. Saadi stands out among literary figures for the notable extent of his influence from Nahj al-Balāgha, to the point that one might argue that after the Holy Qur’an, Nahj al-Balāgha serves as the most significant contentual and thematic model for his thought. The study demonstrates that Saadi frequently draws upon the aphorisms, epistles, and sermons of Imam ʿAlī (peace be upon him) contained in Nahj al-Balāgha, a factor that has enriched the substance of his discourse. Saadi’s reception is predominantly direct, and it appears that one of the key reasons for the enduring appeal of his works among the people lies in their contentual richness grounded in the wisdom and discourse of Imam ʿAlī in Nahj al-Balāgha.
