Abstract

The Holy Qur’an is a unique and enduring work that brought about one of the most profound social transformations in the society of the era of revelation. That society, characterized by backwardness, consisted of individuals who were bewildered and lost in the realm of ignorance and prejudice, possessing particular customs, traits, and traditions—many of which were reprehensible and blameworthy, while some represented positive characteristics and commendable practices inherited from the Abrahamic tradition. The Qur’an was revealed within such a context and nullified all superstitious beliefs and ignorant customs across various social institutions, including the institution of culture. Given the significance of the Qur’an’s role in fostering social transformation during the era of revelation, the present study, employing a descriptive–analytical method, seeks to elucidate the transformative approaches adopted by the Qur’an in that environment. The findings indicate that the Qur’an achieved transformation within the cultural institution through diverse and systematic methods, including awakening the conscience, encouraging rational reflection, posing questions, employing narratives and storytelling, offering moral lessons, temporarily accommodating certain customs, engaging in constructive argumentation, reviving human dignity, utilizing encouragement and deterrence, and establishing cultural institutions.
