Analysis of Contemporary Commentators’ Views on the “Verse of Promise”

According to the opinions of contemporary commentators, two categories of Qur’anic verses can be referred to as verses of Mahdism. The first category consists of verses that explicitly address the subject of Mahdism and are consistent with the apparent interpretative meaning of the verse. These verses explain the philosophy, nature, and details of the emergence and establishment of the government of the promised savior. The second category consists of verses that contain general statements about Mahdism, where the connotation is applied to its instance. The narrations transmitted from the Infallible Imams regarding this category of verses also confirm this reality. Accordingly, the present article, relying on the explicit expression of the Holy Qur’an, examines verse 55 of Surah al-Nur in the domain of Mahdism. The distinctive feature of this study is its limitation of the investigation to the views of contemporary commentators, both Sunni and Shia, and, with the aim of addressing Mahdism from a contemporary perspective, it exclusively focuses on presenting their interpretations.
