Abstract

One of the most significant events in the final years of the Prophet's (PBUH) life was the event of Ghadir. Today, various analyses of this event are presented by Muslims, each offering reasons to support their claims. Based on the arguments of both sides, the historical authenticity of the event can be established, and the concept of caliphate and succession can be demonstrated. However, the main issue is that after the Prophet's (PBUH) passing, the succession matter was resolved very quickly, and no significant public objection against the first caliph was observed. It appears that the process of selecting the caliph was accepted by the general public. Nevertheless, less than three months after the event of Ghadir, it was seemingly forgotten. Did the companions neglect the religion and revert to pre-Islamic practices, or was the matter handled in accordance with tribal culture? This study employs a descriptive-analytical approach to critically examine these possibilities.

One of the most important events of the late life of the Prophet (PBUH) was the incident of Ghadir. Today, various analyses are made by Muslims about this event; each of them presents reasons to prove their claim. Based on the reasons of both sides, the origin of the event can be proven historically and the meaning of caliphate and succession can be shown. But the main issue is that after the death of the Prophet (PBUH), the issue of succession was resolved very quickly and there was no serious public protest against the first caliph. It seems that the process of choosing the caliph was accepted by the general public. But the incident of Ghadir was forgotten in less than three months, or did the companions neglect religion and return to pre-Islamic times, or did they act according to tribal culture? In this study, the above possibilities are criticized and examined using an analytical-descriptive method.
